I've always been curious about hypnotism, and for a long time wasn't sure whether to believe in it or not, as there seemed to be perfectly good reasons behind both sides of the argument. Then one day a magic show was arranged at my high school... A hypnotist was going to come and put on a show right at home. I couldn't miss the chance. I was frightened... I've always been frightened of the idea of losing control of myself, maybe a little frightened of what I might do or become if I was completely disinhibited, and what might surface. But I decided I had to find out whether it actually worked or was just a farce like some people claimed... So when the hypnotist - Robert Maxwell of "the Magically Hip" for anyone who wants to know - called up volunteers, and there were a couple of spots left after the first excited rush, I walked up to the stage myself.

In what followed, I was led into hypnotic trance... or so the alluring voice and sounds of the hypnotist's introductory activity assured me. I tried to follow his instructions, but occasionally found myself making comments in my own head, or picking at the edges of the sensation, wondering why certain pieces of imagery were used and whether it would actually work - before I managed to catch myself and just concentrate on following the words again.

And then the show. I'm sure it was amusing to watch, but in some ways even more amusing to be up on stage. While I felt mildly disappointed and ashamed that I didn't, as the hypnotist said I would, "See everything he asked me to see and feel everything he asked me to feel", I certainly did everything he asked me to do. And in almost every case, I did so without hesitation. I acted out the scenes he described, even though I couldn't see them, and I didn't feel at all self-conscious. MY hypnotism was not complete, but it was deep enough to render me immune to self-consciousness based on peer pressure alone. Things that I personally considered silly, embarrassing and/or distasteful - like giving someone a wet willy or proclaiming that I had a large bum - I grimaced at. But things that I would only have been embarrassed to do because people were watching I had no problem with.

When the show ended, I had had fun and I felt very good - relaxation is a wonderful thing, and the hypnotist had instructed us to feel fantastic as well and remember all the fun we'd had - but I still wasn't sure whether it had worked. So I e-mailed the hypnotist and described my experience. I got a response from his wife, also a professional hypnotist, telling me that I had indeed been hypnotized, but that there were different levels of hypnosis. At lower levels, it simply caused disinhibition and inclined one towards obeying the hypnotist. Deeper hypnosis could cause sights and sounds to appear to the subject, changing sensory feedback, and the deepest kinds of hypnosis could even prevent someone from feeling pain during surgery and help to cure serious psychological issues. The fact that I did everything I was asked to without hesitation proved that I'd been hypnotized... it just wasn't to a high degree. I have accepted this explanation so far, but am still extremely curious about hypnosis. And that, I suppose, is one of the contributing factors that leads me here.

Although I've never experienced a live hypnosis show of any kind my experiences with hypnosis itself are quite similar. Now I just work at hitting the next levels as I initially had trouble.

Stage hypnotism never involves the deeper levels, trust me. I asked the best.
